Waking up this morning in Melanie Cove, in Pideaux Haven is amazing. It is still raining a little and sky is gray but the setting is spectacular. We are 6 boats anchored on one big raft next to each other. We have 2 anchors out and 2 stern ties. The stern ties secures us to the shore that is 30 feet away. The shore is a mountain that seems to be very steep but it is hard to tell because of the dense trees that completely cover the shore. They are huge. I will send pictures if I can when the light is better.
Yesterday the huge winds forecasted for the morning did not fully materialize and the weather report said the storm was stalled, but would last through thurs until noon. So we decided to head north and hope it wouldn’t be too rough. We scrambled around and left around noon. The first part was heading north to the east of Copeland islands where it was very protected. I posted a picture of an amazing house yesterday that was perfectly placed on the cliff to view the entire area. We also passed huge rafts of logs that were coming from the north down the straits. One was attached to the shore line and must have been 5 acres in size. The other about the same size was being pulled by a tug with a long towing line. Really fun to see how that works. We rounded Sarah Point and officially entered Desolation Sound. The Sound itself is very large and comprises many island and waterways that we will explore in the next 2 weeks. The weather for our trip was really not bad. Winds around 15 knots that kicked up a bit as we were arriving. The rain came during the last half of the trip and became stronger later. Entering the area is very narrow with rocks on both sides so it is a bit tricky to maneuver. That along with the depth that varies all over the place. We did not get those pictures as things were busy. Maybe today on exit. But it was an amazing sight to see. Just stunning.
Last night we hosted a pot luck for the group of 18 people. It was a lot of fun and very jolly with all the sailing stories. We had a big pot of spaghetti, 3 different salads, various breads from Nancy’s bakery, and desert. Really a great night getting to know everyone.
Today’s destination will be determined this morning when we gather to review the weather. But we do know we will be in Campbell River Friday late morning. We will be dropping off people and picking up other. And there is provisioning and laundry to do. We will depart again on Saturday morning with fresh clothes and supplies.
I am typing this with one finger on my phone so sorry for the typos.
